In a centrifugal separator (cyclone) for dense matter particle or droplet sepn. from a liq. or gaseous carrier medium, esp. for droplet sepn. from a gas, in which a regulating system regulates the vol. flow of the medium into the separator, the novelty is that (a) the inlet openings (31a-c, 33) of the separator (40) are associated with the respective shut-off valves (30a-c, 32) and can be independently opened or closed; (b) one shut-off valve (32) can continuously enlarge or decrease an inlet opening (33) cross-section; and (c) at least one further inlet valve (30a-c) has only two positions; i.e. a shut-off position and a throughflow position. Also claimed are (i) an appts. for dense matter particle and droplet sepn. from a gas, esp. for sepn. of dust and water and oil droplets from compressed air or natural gas; and (ii) a process for adjusting the vol. flow into a centrifugal separator having several inlet openings.
