Aminopropionic acid derivatives of general formula (I) in which the radical R<1> is a saturated, straight-chained or branched alkyl group with 8 to 22 C atoms, the radicals R<2> and R<3> are mutually independently hydrogen or a methyl group and the radicals X and Y are mutually independently hydrogen, alkaline metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium, alkyl ammonium or alkanol ammonium, are suitable for the fatty treatment of leather. The leathers thus treated exhibit good washing and cleaning resistance, fogging resistance and waterproofness.
