A hammer (26A) for mounting to and rotary movement by a rotor of a material reducing machine. The hammer is mounted at a first end portion (56) thereof for free pivotal movement about an axis (52) parallel to the axis of rotation of the rotor. A material engaging tooth (60) extends radially outwardly from the second end portion thereof. In a preferred embodiment, the tooth is a rotary conical bit.
