1,111,318. Mounting blowing lances. UNITED STATES STEEL CORPORATION. 19 Nov., 1965 [30 Nov., 1964], No. 49354/65. Heading F4B. Steelmaking converter blowing equipment comprises an oxygen lance 8 extending downwardly through an opening 7 in an exhaust hood 5, and a horizontally movable frame F supporting said lance and also supporting an assembly of sheaves 9 which carry and feed the hoses supplying oxygen and cooling water in such a manner that parts of said hoses below the sheaves extend axially of the lance. The latter hangs from a carriage 16 vertically movable in tracks along the frame edge 14, by cable 27 wound on a motor driven hoist drum 56 having a counterbalance cable 64, extending over pulleys 66, to a counterweight 67. The sheave assembly 9 is mounted on a shaft joumalled in end carriages slidable vertically in tracks 47 at a speed which must be half the linear speed of axial travel of the lance 8. To this end vertical movement of the sheave assembly is controlled by a cable 70 wound on a hoist drum 58 on the same drive shaft as drum 56 but having half the diameter of the latter drum. The frame F is suspended from a trolley 30 running on beams 32 and driven from a motor 38 through two sets of rack and pinion gearing 35. Two frames F may be provided whose paths of travel intersect at a point in vertical alignment with the exhaust hood opening 7. |
