The seal, designed to ensure that a container is not opened in transit without this being evident, comprises a male component (1) with a shank (2) to engage with a female component (20). The male component has a locking tip (3) at one end and a head (4) at the other which can be separated from one another by a shearing assembly which requires a force of over 800kg to break it. The shearing assembly comprises a rod (7) in a slot (5) or rivets. At least a part of the seal is covered with a transparent plastics coating (8), and is marked with symbols which can be seen through the coating.
