A sliding block (30) is engaged onto a guide shaft (11), outside the bone, which is in engagement with a reference shaft passed into the medullary canal of the bone. The block consists of a first components (31) which slides along the guide shaft, and a second component (32) with holes (42) and a guide surface (43). The first component includes a locking mechanism (33). The second component is movable in translation relative to the first, by means of a rack and pinion mechanism (35) and can be locked in a selected one of a number of positions. The two components may be secured in selected positions relative to the bone and the distance between them measured.
