Removal of hydroxynitroaromatic cpds. (I) from mixts. of nitroaromatic cpds. and (I) comprises: (a) washing the mixt. with an aq. soln. of a neutralising agent; (b) separating the organic and aq. phases; (c) recycling the aq. phase to step (a); and (d) periodically removing a purge stream of the aq. phase for destruction (e.g. incineration).
