PURPOSE:The thermal decomposition of phenol derivatives is effected in the presence of an oxide of metal selected from Fe, Mn, Co, Cu, Th, Sb, V, Sn and others to produce alkenylphenols in high hield. CONSTITUTION:The thermal decomposition preferably in gas phase of a phenol derivative of the formula (R1 is alkyl; R2-4 are H, alkyl) such as 1,1-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethane is conducted using an oxide of metal selected from the group consisting of Fe, Mn, Co, Cu, Th, Sb, V, Sn, Mo, and W to produce an alkyenylphenol such as p-vinylphenol. The combination of a basic compound as sodium carbonate, chromium oxide, with the catalyst is preferred. |
