PURPOSE:To obtain a modified polyethylene which has a high melt surface tension, is excellent in moldability, and gives a recyclable molded article by reacting polyethylene with di-2-ethylhexylperoxy dicarbonate and melt kneading the reaction product. CONSTITUTION:A modified polyethylene which has a melt surface tension (MS) at 190 deg.C and an intrinsic viscosity [eta] measured in tetralin at 135 deg.C satisfying the relation: log (MS) >4.66Xlog[eta]-0.340 and has a boiling-xylene exraction residue of 1 wt.% or lower is obtd. by mixing polyethylene with di-2- ethylhexylperoxy dicarbonate in an amt. of 1-10mmol based on 100g polyethylene in an inert gas atmosphere, reacting them with each other at 50-130 deg.C for 10min to 3 hr, and melt kneading the reaction product. Polyethylene used here is pref. a powder just after the completion of polymn. process and before pelletizing from the viewpoint of reaction efficiency and commercial production.
