The types of input video signals are discriminated automatically, and the input video signal is processed according to the discriminated types. The VCR includes an image processer (10) for processing video signal detected by a video head, an APC circuit (29) for generating subcarrier signal fit to NTSC or M-PAL, a decoder (20) for decoding color signal transmitted by the image signal processor(10) according to subcarrier signal generated by the APC circuit(29), a M-PAL signal decoder (40) for decoding M-PAL signal by shifting the phase of burst signal generated by the decoder (20), and NTSC/M-PAL discriminator (30) for discriminating the type of an input video signal.
