The apparatus includes a cam gear (14) with an upper spiral cam groove for moving the tray base, and with a lower spiral cam groove (28) engaging with a guide projection (30) on a guide member (16), causing the guide member to move linearly backwards and forwards when the gear rotates. The guide member has a rack (34) engaging with the lower gear portion of an operation gear (36), the upper gear portion which engages with a rack (38) on an operation member (20). The backwards and forwards motion of the operation member causes the stepped surface (42) to slide under the guide rod (40) of the pick-up operation plate (18). When a tilting sensor detects the tilt angle of the disc surface and converts it to an electrical signal applied to the driving motor, the cam gear is rotated causing the operation member to move operation plate to the correct position.
