The modem has multiple bit-rates and accesses other modem by automatically transforming its bit-rate into bit-rate equal to other modem. This modem ascertains bit-rate of other modem and automatically transforms its bit-rate when user doesn't know bit-rate of other modem. If the bit-rate of other modem is below its bit-rate, this modem can access automatically. The method employs a DTE (data terminal equipment)(10), a USART (Universal Synchronous & Asynchronous Receiver & Transmitter), a modem(30), a DAA (Data Access Arrangement) circuit(40), a MPU (Micro Processor Unit)(50), a ROM(60) and a RAM(70).
