In a milling and boring machine a headstock support 5, mounted for vertical movement on an upright 3 which is itself movable along a table 1, has rotatably mounted within it a cylindrical body 11 having a polyhedral member 41 mounted on its front end to which are attached machining attachments for performing circular milling, dividing, grinding, boring and other operations. The cylindrical body 11 is rotated by a variable speed motor 62 via a pinion and toothed ring 67, 68 and spindles 14, 15 are advanced via the carriage and lead screw device 69, 70. A motor 40 and lead screw and nut device 33, 34 advances the headstock support 5. The motor 62 also drives a shaft 71 for connecting through shafts 74, 77 to the machining attachments. These attachments provide auxiliary spindles 25, 26 parallel to the main spindles 14, 15 for machining end faces of a workpiece and the spindle carriers 21 are movable radially within brackets 19 by a pair of bevel gears connected to the said shafts 74, 77 and a lead screw device. The rotation of the cylindrical body 11 may be accurately stopped in angular positions by arranging press buttons around a peripheral groove 78 that actuate a contact carrier for stopping the drive motor 62 and hydraulic operated clamps (54) (Fig. 20, not shown) and looking device (80) (Fig. 21, not shown) positively hold the cylindrical body 11. An optical observation device may also be provided by attaching a graduated strip to the rotating cylindrical body 11. The drive motor 62 rotates with the cylindrical body 11 and the electric supply cable, is wound on a drum on the end of motor housing. For most operations an allowance of 1¢ revolutions of the cylindrical body is sufficient but if, for instance, spiral milling is required a larger takeup drum may be provided. Alternatively, a conventional brush and slip ring electric connection to the rotating part may be provided. If one machining attachment only is used a balance weight 126 may be fixed to the member 41. The polyhedral member 41 may be in the form of a large diameter plate attached to the front face of the headstock. |
