Lengths of fabric are joined by transverse seams to form a continuous band. The band is cut to length and joined by a closing seam to give the desired sleeve dia. Automatic means are used to ensure that the seam to seam distance is never less than a predetermined min. Fabric pieces (7) are pref. cut off a roll and joined by transverse seams (12a) and the front end (12b) of the continuous band (12) is locked at a desired position. A photoelectric cell (46) and encoder (28) measure the distance from the front end to the first transverse seam (12a). If this distance is less than a preset min., the band is cut upstream of the seam and the process is repeated. Otherwise, the band is formed into a loop (44) at a preset width and the distance between the last seam and the end cut point is also checked before the loop is cut and joined as a sleeve. The width of the loop can be adjusted to make the seam to end distance enough.
