The lens is arranged with a central portion, coaxial with the optical axis (12) of the eye, and a lateral portion surrounding the central portion. The average coefficient of transparency of the central portion, parallel to the optical axis, is significantly different from that of the lateral portion over the range of visible wavelengths. The lens is formed of material whose external surfaces (9,10) have at least some regions of reduced transparency compared to the average transparency of the lens. The product of the transparencies of the external surfaces is constant, and the regions of reduced transparency may be polygonal, linear or circular in shape.
