PROCESS FOR MAKING N-ACYL TAURIDES

A process for the preparation of an N-acyl tauride comprising reacting an aliphatic or alicyclic carboxylic acid having from 6 to 22 carbon atoms with a taurine salt having the formula: HNR1-CHR2-CHR3-SO3M, wherein R1 is H or a C1 to C20 hydrocarbon radical; R2 and R3 are each independently H, or C1-C6 hydrocarbon radical; M is a salt forming radical selected from the group consisting of alkali metals and alkaline earth metals; in a substantially inert atmosphere in the presence of an alkali metal borohydride, wherein the alkali metal is selected from the group of sodium, potassium, lithium and ammonium to produce a reaction product containing N-acyl tauride.
