The appts. begins to record on video the programme currently being transmitted and appearing on the TV screen when a switch is operated. If the viewer, having missed a section of the programme, operates a second switch, the appts. displays the video recording, suitably shifted in time, in place of the actual transmission, while continuing to record the programme as it is transmitted. The viewer can operate a third switch to reduce gradually the time difference between the video playback and the actual transmission, until the time shift is eliminated or the programme ends. This is achieved by increasing the speed of the video playback. A visual display indicates in minutes and seconds the time difference between the actual transmission and the video playback. Realisation can be by a double deck recorder, a two head for two tapes or a PC using a so-called high value video card and digitising the images for storing on a main memory.
