Valve assembly includes a stem (16) having a first section (18) toward the cam and a second section (22) toward the valve face, the first section (18) having a larger diameter than the second section (22). A housing (30) defines a closed chamber (31) having a first bore (33) which closely receives said first section (18) and a coaxial second bore (43) which closely receives the second section (22). As the cam (50) rotates to lift the valve face (15) from the valve seat, the first section (18) acts as a piston which increases pressure of hydraulic fluid in the chamber (31) to provide a spring force to return the valve (10).
