Each stringer tape 10 of a sliding-clasp fastener having concealed single filament coupling elements has a series of apertures 12 through which the coupling head portions 4 of the coupling element 3 project and the main unapertured tape portion 14 is folded down over an abutment, formed, e.g., by chain stitching or by a braid 6 secured by stitching 8 to the element, but is free to be lifted to enable it to be stitched at 19 to the material 18 of a garment. The slider 17 runs beneath the tapes 10 except for the pull member 17b. The apertures 12 are formed in the tapes by omitting the warp threads and the elements 3 may be so gripped by the weft threads that no other means for securing the tapes are needed, although in some arrangements, e.g., Fig. 4 (not shown), the small unapertured portions 15 of the tapes below the elements are secured by the stitching 8 which also secures a spacing cord 5. In other arrangements, e.g., Fig. 6 (not shown), the small unapertured portions 15 of the tape are stitched to the top of the elements to form the abutments in place of the braid 6, the weft threads 13 being passed around the spacing cords 5. The elements, which may be of nylon, may be of coil or meander type. The coils may be waisted, in which case the abutments may be formed merely by stitching securing the small unapertured tape portions, Fig. 8 (not shown), or by a plastics filament welded along the top of the elements, Fig. 10 (not shown). In the case of meander type elements, the upper limbs may be stepped, Fig. 12 (not shown), or they may be smaller than the lower limbs, Fig. 18 (not shown), in which case the abutments may be formed by stitching passing over the interconnecting portions; or the small unapertured tape portions may be stitched between the upper and lower limbs, Fig. 13 (not shown), in which case the apertures in the tapes are made large enough to pass over the interconnecting portions of the elements by omitting some weft threads as well as the warp threads, Fig. 15 (not shown). |
