The vacuum space of a vacuum flask is formed between an inner aluminium shell 6 and an outer mild steel shell 9 which are joined by a stainless steel neck member 44. The joint 12 between the inner shell and the neck member may be brazed or friction welded. A brazed or welded joint 16 is provided between the neck and the outer shell, and the latter may include a brazed, welded or soldered joint 19. The vacuum vessel is held between ribs 38 and a sealing ring 32 in a synthetic plastic jacket 26. The bottom 33 of the jacket is screwed to the main body by means of threads 36, 37 and a cup 5 screws to the top of the body. A cap 4 also screws to the jacket body and has a plug filled. with powdered cork 15 to close the neck of the vacuum vessel.
