Novel 5 - (piperidine - 4 - spiro) - oxazolidin- 2-ones, of formula wherein R 1 is hydrogen, alkyl, aralkyl, or #- aroylalkyl, R 2 is alkyl or aryl, R 3 is hydrogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alkanoyl, aralkyl, or aroyl; and aryl and aroyl groups may be substituted by halogen (including fluorine), alkyl, hydroxy, alkoxy, amino and alkylamino substituents, are prepared by reacting a 1- benzyl - 4 - hydroxy - 4 - aminomethyl piperidine having the group R 2 on the methyl radical, with a carbonic diester, urea, urethane or phosgene, and if required, (1) introducing R 3 when other than H by reaction with R 3 X after replacement of said H by alkali metal, and (2) introducing R 1 when other than benzyl by hydrogenation and reaction with R 3 X, X being halogen or a tosyl group. 1 - Benzyl - 4 - hydroxy - 4 - (1 - aminoethyl) and 4-(α-aminobenzyl) piperidines are prepared by hydrogenation and treatment with hot HCl of the corresponding 1-benzyl-4-tetrahydropyran - 2 - yl - oxy) - 4 - (1 - imino - methyl) piperidine produced by hydrolysis of the product of a Grignard reaction between 1- benzyl - 4 - cyano - 4 - (tetrahydropyran - 2 - yl-oxy)-piperidine and R 2 MgHal. 1 - Benzyl - 4 - cyano - 4 - (tetrahydropyran- 2-yl-oxy)-piperidine is prepared by addition of dihydropyran, in an acidic medium, to 1- benzyl-piperidine-4-one cyanohydrin.
