A scintillation counter (1) that can accurately measure the intensity of beta ray radiation comprises two scintillation fibers (11 and 12) which emit light of different wavelengths and which are provided in series as a probe (10). One of the scintillation fibers (12) is covered with a beta -ray shield (13). The optical signal generated at the probe (10) is transmitted through an optical fiber (20) and separated by a light separating element (31) into components of different wavelength ( lambda 1 and lambda 2). One portion of the separated optical signal ( lambda 1) is incident on a light detector (32) and the intensity of the incident light detected. The other portion of the separated optical signal ( lambda 2) is incident on a light detector (33) and the intensity of the incident light detected. The intensity of the beta radiation is obtained by subtracting the output of detector (33) from that of detector (32) to give an output that is corrected for gamma radiation. <IMAGE> |
