The laying table (1) is placed in connection to a shaft (4) in which a load surface (5) is raisable and lowerable in time with a stack (3) being formed on the load surface so that the stack upper edge is permanently at the level of the laying table. The device has a sheet centering unit (7) with a horizontal first strip arranged in the shaft at the height of the laying table upper surface. This first strip works in conjunction with a horizontal movable second strip, the load surface engaging under the second strip and with its displacement causes the second strip to move. This ensures that the paper sheet (2) on being laid on the load surface and the stack always is laid at a predetermined distance from the strips within the edge of the load surface.
