A silver halide photographic material comprises a silver halide emulsion layer provided on a support. The silver halide emulsion layer contains a selenium or tellurium compound represented by the formula (I): <CHEM> in which Ch is Se or Te; R<1> is hydrogen, an aliphatic group, an aromatic group, a heterocyclic group, -OR<1><1> or -NR<1><2>R<1><3>; each of R<1><1>, R<1><2> and R<1><3> is hydrogen, an aliphatic group, an aromatic group or a heterocyclic group; and R<2> is an aliphatic group, an aromatic group or a heterocyclic group.
