<p>A device and method for selecting or detecting copy sheet size, resizing a copy and other operations using an image input scanner (114; Fig.1) and/or an edit pad. The various copy sheet selections and detections made may be used to select sheets (125; Fig.1) from various copy sheet trays in a printing machine (Fig.6). In the case of non-standard sheet sizes, the copy sheet path, sheet gripper timing, image transfer and other aspects of copy sheet handling and printing may be automatically modified according to the copy sheet size detection system of the present invention. Copy sheet path sensors and processors controlling them in a printer can be automatically reprogrammed so as to prevent misfeeds or misfeed indications resulting from varied copy sheet sizes being used in the printing machine. The edit pad may detect a two dimensional rectangular area (Fig.4) of a copy sheet according to designation of a single input point on an edit pad. A processor (102; Fig.1) determines a rectangle size according to a predetermined base point at the intersection of the x-y axis, an individual x point on the x axis, the input point and an individual y point on the y axis. An image input scanner (114; Fig.1) may also be used alone or in combination with an edit pad for detecting a length and width of a copy sheet. The width of the sheet may be detected by fast scan direction sensing at a normal or reduced resolution. The length of the sheet may be detected by normal or reduced resolution slow scan direction sensing, or by multiplying the duration between the passing of the lead and trail edge of the sheet moving past the image input scanner (not moving in a process direction) times a predetermined constant velocity of the sheet. <IMAGE></p> |
