An automatic vehicle speed control system comprising a receiver and buttons (12, 16) for entering a reference speed, and a controlled-vehicle speed regulator (44) for determining a speed correction in the presence of a preceding vehicle. The speed regulator (44) comprises long-term speed control elements (64, 83-85) for correcting the speed of the controlled vehicle gradually and comfortably as a function of the measured distance between the controlled and preceding vehicle, the speed of the controlled vehicle, and the speed of the preceding vehicle; and short-term speed control elements (65; 80-82, 98) for rapidly correcting the controlled-vehicle speed as a function of the measured distance, the speed of the controlled vehicle, and the speed of the preceding vehicle.
