This invention relates to a method and to a device for automatically introducing an additive in metered (dosed) quantities into the fuel of a compression-ignition engine (1) of a motor vehicle in order to keep the additive concentration in the fuel at a reference value. This method and this device make it possible to vary over time the reference value for the concentration, on the basis of at least one parameter representing the usage of the vehicle, in order to limit the amount of additive injected into the fuel and improve the operating conditions of a particulates filter placed in the exhaust system of the engine.
