PURPOSE:To prevent the movement of liquid crystal molecule during driving a liquid crystal element by forming plural projecting and recessing parts on the liquid crystal side surface of an orientation controlling layer in at least one of substrates and making the projecting and recessing parts of the orientation controlling layers on both substrates different from each other. CONSTITUTION:Transparent electrodes 2a, 2b, insulating films 3a, 3b covering the transparent electrodes 2a, 2b, orientation controlling layers 5a, 5b covering the insulating films 3a, 3b are formed on the two pieces of glass substrates 1a, 1b respectively in this order. And the surface of the insulating film 3a shows projected and recessed shape by incorporating many numbers of a fine particle 9 having a prescribed diameter in the insulating film 3a on the substrate 1a and many projecting and recessing parts are formed on the surface of the orientation controlling layer 5a covering the insulating film 3a by the fine particles 9. While, the fine particles 9 is not incorporated in the insulating film 3b on the other substrate 1b and the surface of the orientation controlling layer 5b covering the insulating film 3b is flat and then, the surface shape of the orientation controlling layer 5a, 5b is asymmetrical to each other.
