A plastics extrusion/granulation plant comprises an extruder 1, having plastics and additives feed lines 2-4, and a granulator 5. Granulate is carried along a pipe 6 by cooling water to a water separator 7 during normal operation of the extruder, but is automatically by-passed to a second separator 13 when the extruder is started or stopped or when faults are detected associated with feed lines 2-4. A control 10, connected by lines 11 to signal transmitters in lines 2-4 and the extruder drive, operates a valve 9 to open or close pipe 6 and simultaneously close or open pipe 12 to separator 13. The quality of the granulate may be judged at inspection point 17 during by-pass working and valve 9 is preferably manually actuated to resume normal operation. A delay may be imposed on the operation of valve 9 after signals have been transmitted from the extrusion feed or drive.</p> |
