A method of milling or grinding threads-on a rod 20 comprises providing a guide-screw 25 coaxial with the rod, passing the screw through a stationary nut 24 and using the screw-and-nut engagement to guide the rod axially and rotationally past a tool 11, the nut being adjustable to enable multistart threads to be cut. The machine is similar to that of Specification 1,011,157, but the nut consists of a plunger 58 which can be inserted in any of a number of bores in a mounting 56 so displacing the screw and enabling multi-start threads to be cut. In a modification, one plunger 58 is used on an indexible head. The rod and guide may be in- tegral with one another. |
