PURPOSE: To obtain a magneto-optical recording medium having good reading- out and writing characteristics by obtaining amorphous rare earth oxide exhibiting good amorphous stability and low chemical reactivity in contact with a magnetic material, thereby forming a dielectric film. CONSTITUTION: This magneto-optical recording medium 2 has a magneto-optical 14 and a dielectric layer 12 contg. the stable amorphous rare earth oxide. The dielectric layer 12 contains the stable amorphous rare earth oxide selected from a group consisting of Y2 O3 , La2 O3 Tb2 O3 , CeOx , ScO2 and Yb2 O3 . The compsn. contg at least 50vol.% rare earth oxide exhibits a diffused halo electron diffraction pattern and does not substantially contain the observable crystals larger than an average size of 2nm when the compsn. is observed with a transmission electron microscope. The X-ray diffraction scanning of 10<=2θ<=60 deg. using the copper K-αincident radiation of the film of the rare earth oxide of about 100nm thickness placed on a TbFeCo film of about 5nm does not exhibit the peak corresponding to the crystal phase of the rare earth oxide after annealing for one hour at 300 deg.C in the air. |
