PURPOSE:To drive a matrix for a graded display using a chiral smectic liq. crystal by providing a liq. crystal element furnished with a polarizer and a liq. crystal cell having a chiral smectic crystal and a voltage impressing means to realize the graded display. CONSTITUTION:This liq. crystal display is provided with a polarizer, a couple of substrates 11 and 11' with at least the one uniaxially oriented, a matrix electrode formed with first and second electrodes crossing the substrates 11 and 11' and a liq. crystal cell enough to suppress the formation of a helical structure, arranged between the substrates 11 and 11' and having a chiral smectic liq. crystal generating a uniaxial anisotropic phase. When the electric field E or E' above a fixed threshold value and having a different polarity is impressed on the cell by the means 21 and 21', the dipole moment is directed upward 24 or downward 24' in correspondence with the vector of the electric field E or E', and the liq. crystal molecule is correspondingly oriented to a first stable state 23 or to a second stable state 23'. |
