[Also in Division B3] A bearing assembly is made by placing a member 1, with a curved outer surface, inside a cylindrical blank inside a die 10, and deforming the blank by axial pressure so that its inner surface conforms to the inner member while its outer surface remains cylindrical. The inner member 1 is part-spherical, or may be ellipsoidal in axial cross-section. The blank is of ductile metal with a layer 9 of bearing material, e.g. acetal polymer or bronze impregnated with P.T.F.E., and may be formed from a flat strip. The die 10 may be removed or remain as a housing. |
