To process at least non-ferrous metal and non-metal scrap, from grinding and shredding of scrap vehicles, the non-metal scrap is incinerated and the high temp. exhaust gas is retained as heat to melt the non-ferrous metal. The combustion gas is cleaned before release into the atmosphere, esp. to remove heavy metal particles. Also claimed is an assembly with an incinerator (1) for the solid scrap, with a furnace (2) fitted with an opening (3) for the feed of non-metal scrap (4). An outlet (5) has a heating channel (6) to raise the exhaust gas to a high temp. At least one smelter unit (7,70-71) for the non-ferrous metals has a feed entry (8,80,81) for the metals (9,90,91). A crucible (10,100,101) is surrounded by part of the heating channel (160-162) to melt the metal. The gas cleaner (11) has an entry (12) from the heating channel round the crucibles. An outlet (13) to the atmosphere releases the gas after it has been cleaned of heavy metal particles.
