The protection device (30) is for an extension lead having a number of female sockets (2) consisting of circular openings (11) each having holes (20,21,22) for two mains pins and an earth pin formed on a male plug. The protection circuit (30) plugs into one of the female sockets. It is in the form of a mains plug with two mains pins (32) and an earth pin, but has no external cable. Instead it has series varistors (37) and parallel varistors (35) together with a gas tube (36) connected internally to the mains pins to provide the protection circuits.
