Determining the fraction of air used in an internal combustion engine

Process for determining the proportion of air taken into an internal combustion engine (M) comprises at least one cylinder, inlet circuits for air and exhaust circuits for the burnt gases. The inlet air is mixed with a known concentration of a labelling substance (G) which decomposes at the temperature in the cylinders during combustion. The quantity of labelled air present in the cylinder during combustion is measured by comparing the known concentration with the residual concentration in the exhaust gases. Device for carrying out the above process comprising measuring devices in the inlets and exhaust to measure the concentration of the labelling substance, and a processor to determine the proportion of air present in the cylinder during combustion by comparing the measurements.
