A method and an apparatus for removing labels from plastic containers (R) such as bottles to enable recycling of the plastic. According to the method, the bottles are subjected to a thermal shock by exposing the bottle walls to steam jets (31, 310) which abruptly soften the plastic and cause the labels to come unstuck.
