Surface treatment of metallic parts, to increase fatigue resistance in corrosive media, is carried out by incidence, on the surface, of a laser beam (1) of power density at least 1 (pref. 1-20) GW/sq.cm. Pref. The treatment is pref. carried out using laser beam pulses of energy 50-100 and duration 0.1-50 nanosecs. The metallic surface is covered with a heat absorbing layer (4), pref. of aluminium, and a confinement layer (5) pref. a glass or water.
