Environmentally friendly utilisation of waste wood

Utilisation of wood, esp. mature timber, involves shredding the wood (1); removing ferromagnetic metal components (4) (e.g. screws and nails) using a magnet (3); screening the prod. (5); using the coarse particles removed on the sieve (6) for burning and/or prodn. of chipboard; separating the material passing the sieve (7) into coarse (8) and fine (10) fractions; using the coarse fraction (8) as ground cover for riding areas, animal race-tracks or paddocks; and using the fine fraction (10) as litter material (11) in boxes and stalls. The obtd. litter material is claimed, consisting of shredded wood particles of dia. below a defined threshold value (pref. within a defined range). The material is pref. enriched with lactic acid bacteria.
