To cover a shaped carrier plate with gathered leather, such as for vehicle interior door and side panels, a retainer frame (14) which is open in the centre is applied with a partial pressure against the leather section (13) edges on the carrier plate (10). The leather and the edges are held, so that the leather can be gathered manually according to the carrier shape, with the surplus pulled round to the rear and fixed in place.
