To position and lay a weft yarn, at a warp knitter, the wefts are pre-tensed parallel to the row of needles (7) at the outer side of the brace (3) with extended slide needles (1). They are laid on the needle row, in the take-off direction of the material (81), to be caught by the closed needle hooks as the needles (1) are retracted through the brace (3), and be laid in place at least through the pull action of the carrier chain. Also claimed is a warp knitter where the yarn guide recesses of the hook rows (721) of the carrier chains are at the needle plane (10) and about at the plane of the brace (3). The brace units (31) are at least at the slide needle (1) plane, as needles, projecting from the plane into the take-off direction.
