The 4-arylisoindoles of formula (I) are effective analgesics including the purified stereoisomers and pharmaceutically acceptable salts thereof, wherein (II) is (III), (IV), (V) or (VI); Rb is hydroxy or C¿1-5? alkylcarbonyloxy.
