Formaldehyde-free, aqueous synthetic resin dispersions, obtainable by one-step emulsion polymerisation of mono mixtures comprising (A) from 50 to 99% by weight of at least one monomer from the group consisting of acrylates and methacrylates of C1-C14-alkanols, vinyl esters of monocarboxylic acids carrying up to 5 carbon atoms, and styrene (monomer A), (B) from 0.5 to 40% by weight of at least one of the monomers acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile (monomer B), (C) from 0.5 to 10% by weight of at least one monomer of the formula I in which R<1> is hydrogen or the methyl group, and R<2> and R<3>, independently of one another, are hydrogen or a C1-C4-alkyl radical (monomer C), (D) from 0 to 5% by weight of at least one monomer in the group consisting of alpha , beta -unsaturated monocarboxylic and dicarboxylic acids carrying 3 to 5 carbon atoms, their amides and anhydrides (monomer D), and (E) from 0 to 3% by weight of at least one further bifunctional monomer (monomer E).
