An electric throughflow water heater has a number of heating elements (2 to 5) positioned in the heating conduit (14) which are energised via a controller (1) and collectively afford a variable power input for temperature regulation. An inlet (6) and outlet (7) temperature sensor together with a flowmeter (8) provide signals which enable the cyclic estimation (15) of power requirement at intervals determined by the change-over switch (12) in order to ensure an exit temperature (7) in conformity with an input instruction (9) and as referenced by a comparator module (10).
