Opto-electronic network for release of vehicle airbag

The opto-electronic data transfer system includes light sources (1), opto-electronic converters (5) and light guides (4). Some of the light guide is positioned over likely crush zones and its optic path is changed instantly when the crush zone is subjected to impacts. The changes in the opto-electronic properties of the light guide system are immediately detected and used to operate crash protection systems e.g. airbags. The light guides are applied to the inside walls of the vehicle body in likely crash zones. These include the insides of door panels and front- and rear crush zones. The light guides are glued to the vehicle body, or are embedded in plastic. For plastic bodied vehicles the light guides can be embedded inside the plastic walls. The light guides can be linked in series. The reference light signals are applied in pulses, along with the data transmission pulses.
