The system includes a valve operator device for selectively deactivating intake and exhaust valves associated with the cylinders. A number of fuel injectors is included with one of the injectors being associated with each of the cylinders. A control device includes a device for selecting a cylinder to be deactivated and a timing device for determining when the selected cylinder is operating during intake events. The control device directs the valve operator device to begin deactivation of the valves of the selected cylinder during a set intake event. The valve operator completes the deactivation by a time not later than the beginning of a next exhaust event of the selected cylinder.
