A straight bar for transmitting longitudinal loads consists of two coaxial, thin walled tubes (4,6) butt joined and enclosed in a collar (16). The tubes (4,6) are made of FRP and have a high bending stiffness. The connecting collar (16) is also made of FRP and comprises a thin shell with an axially parallel slit bonded to both tubes (4,6). The shell (16) has an inner layer of axially parallel fibres and an outer layer of unidirectional fibres intersecting each other at more than 20 deg. to the axis. A woven or braided sheath (18) of high strength fibre impregnated with resin covers the outside of the collar (16) and extends beyond the ends where it is laminated to both bars (4,6). In a mfg. process the collar (16) is moulded around a foam core with the same dia as the tubes (4,6), the foam is removed and the shell (16) wall cut axially before being bent open for location around the bars (4,6). |
