A method and apparatus (8) for attaching/detaching a filmstrip (16) to or from a film cartridge (10) having a take-up spool (14) rotatably mounted therein and an access opening (28) for allowing film (16) to be inserted into or removed from the cartridge (10). The apparatus (8) includes a first positioning mechanism for positioning the film cartridge (10) in a first orientation. An attachment tool (66) is provided for movement between an non-engaging position and a first engaging position. A mechanism is provided for releasing the cartridge (10) from its first orientation and for biasing the cartridge to a second orientation.
