PURPOSE: To obtain a sustained release heterodisperse hydrogel system capable of continuing the release of a medicine having a poor solubility and a therapeutic activity for a significant period of time to manifest a good biological efficacy. CONSTITUTION: This sustained release heterodisperse hydrogel system for an insoluble drug, consists of (A) an effective amount of a medicine for manifesting a therapeutic activity and having <10 g/1 solubility, (B) a gelling agent containing a heteropolysaccharide rubber (e.g.; xanthane rubber) and a homopolysaccharie rubber (e.g.; jumping bean rubber) capable of crosslinking the above heteropolysaccharide rubber on exposing the same to an environmental fluid, in (1:3)-(3:1) ratio, (C) an inactive pharmaceutical diluent selected from monosaccharides, disacchardes, sugar alcohols and their mixtures in (1:8)-(8:1) range of ratios to the component (B), (D) a cationic crosslinking agent capable of crosslinking the component (B) and also reinforcing the gel strength on exposing the same to the environmental fluid (e.g.; calcium sulfate), and a ratio of the components (A) to (B) is (1:3) to (1:8). The system is used as a sustained release oral solid administration material for the absorption of a therapeutically active medicine in the stomach and intestinal tract.
