Means for sealingly transmitting pressure liquid between a non-rotary casing 2 and a passage 16, 17 in a rotary shaft, e.g. for transmitting pressure oil to and from the pitch varying mechanism of a variable pitch ship's propeller through the propeller shaft 1, comprises a non-rotary ring 18 having liquid passage means 20, 21 therein and mounted on the shaft for limited axial movement between two rings 6 and 8 rotatable with the shaft, the end faces of the ring 18 sealingly co-operating with radial faces on the rings 6 and 8 and means being provided to generate a liquid pressure hydrodynamically between the co-operating faces of the rings. The ring 6 is formed by a collar on the shaft and the ring 8, keyed to the shaft by a key 11, is slidably mounted on a backing ring 7 and urged by springs 14 towards the ring 18 a radial bore 20 in which is connected by a pipe 26 and pivotal union 27 with an oil supply pipe 28. An 0-ring 9 seals the ring 8 to the ring 7 which is secured to the shaft 1. Rotation of the ring 18 is prevented by a pin 19. Axial grooves 22 extend from circumferential groove 21 in the ring 18 to the end faces of the ring each of which has a flat annular part 23, surrounded by a groove 24 and an annular area 25 comprising spaced radially extending grooves 29, Fig. 3, and circumferentially inclined surfaces 30 which, when the shaft rotates, act to pressurize the oil present between them and the opposing faces of the rings 6 and 8. The ring 8 has grooves therein adjacent a shoulder 10 on the shaft and oil passing through these grooves acts on the back of the ring to augment the pressure of the springs 14 urging it towards the ring 18. |
